A Sweet Sting of Salt

A cry in a night-time storm brings midwife Jean outside, where she finds a soaked young woman in labour. Communication is difficult, and Jean knows almost nothing about the stranger beyond her immediate need for help. When neighbour Tobias arrives to collect his wife Muirin, the explanation raises further concerns. He has concealed the pregnancy, and Muirin changes noticeably in his presence. Jean has reasons to avoid interfering in other people's affairs, but concern develops into a love she cannot dismiss. Looking for answers draws her toward a secret more dangerous than she anticipated. Protecting Muirin and the baby will require more than the practical care Jean first offered.
