The story
Louisa Cosgrove expects more from life than the narrow future offered to a respectable Victorian doctor’s daughter. Instead, at seventeen, she is taken to Wildthorn Hall and confined under another name. Stripped of authority over her own story, she must work out who arranged her incarceration and how to convince anyone that she belongs outside the asylum. Her developing relationship with attendant Eliza offers another reason to imagine freedom, even as the institution limits her choices. Jane Eagland’s historical YA novel follows a young woman resisting the identities imposed on her, with an investigation into betrayal unfolding alongside her recognition of the person she wants to become.
