Upright Women Wanted

Esther has hidden herself in a Librarian’s wagon to escape a marriage arranged by her father. The groom was once promised to her best friend, the woman Esther loved, who has been executed for possessing forbidden propaganda. Leaving home is an act of desperation, but the traveling Librarians offer a world she does not yet understand. Across an authoritarian American Southwest, the distribution of approved reading material conceals more complicated loyalties. Esther’s journey brings her among queer people finding ways to resist a regime that demands obedience. Learning how they survive also forces her to reconsider what she has been told about herself and what kind of future might still be possible.
