The Dark Wife
2011
The story
Persephone grows up under the expectations of powerful gods, surrounded by privilege but allowed little freedom to determine her own life. Her encounter with Hades offers a different possibility. In this reimagining, Hades is a goddess whose position has been distorted by Zeus, and the underworld becomes a potential refuge rather than simply a place of punishment. Accepting that refuge means questioning the stories Persephone has inherited about duty, power and the people beyond Olympus. As her connection with Hades develops into love, she begins to consider who she wants to become outside the role chosen for her. The familiar myth is retold around consent, self-discovery and a relationship between two goddesses.
