The Abyss Surrounds Us

Cassandra Leung has grown up learning to train Reckoners, enormous engineered sea creatures used to protect ships in the NeoPacific. Her first independent mission should prove she is ready for the family business. Instead, a pirate attack leaves her captive aboard Santa Elena’s ship. The pirate captain has obtained a Reckoner pup and wants Cas to raise a weapon that will work for the other side. Refusal could be fatal, but cooperation threatens everything Cas was taught to defend. Her developing connection with the pirate girl Swift adds another complication to life under coercion. Caring for a dangerous young creature becomes inseparable from questions about power, freedom and who deserves her loyalty.
