Stone Butch Blues
1993
The story
Jess Goldberg comes of age among working-class butch and femme communities, finding connection in bars and factories while facing hostility from the world outside them. As employment, safety and community become increasingly precarious, Jess makes choices about gender presentation that offer protection while carrying painful personal costs. Relationships provide solidarity, but they cannot remove the pressures of policing, poverty and exclusion. Leslie Feinberg's novel follows a life that unsettles easy boundaries between lesbian and transgender histories, placing intimate experience within wider struggles over work, survival and collective resistance. Jess's search for a livable place in the world is also a search for language and community capable of recognising the complexity of that life.
