Her latest pharmaceutical piracy has produced a disaster: users become so absorbed in their work that ordinary tasks turn dangerous or fatal. Understanding what went wrong also means confronting the interests determined to keep the drug's origins secret. Military agent Eliasz and robot Paladin are pursuing her, while developing a complicated bond of their own. Their intersecting journeys expose a society in which ownership extends beyond inventions and property to bodies and minds.
