Ask The Passengers
2012
The story
Astrid Jones has questions she does not feel able to bring to her family. Her mother pushes, her father withdraws, and neither seems likely to offer the kind of listening she needs. Instead, Astrid lies on a picnic table and sends her thoughts toward the strangers travelling in planes above her. They cannot judge or demand explanations about her growing love for another girl. Keeping that relationship private becomes more difficult as her friends press for answers and her feelings deepen. The story follows Astrid's effort to understand herself without surrendering to other people's definitions, alongside the unexpected connections suggested by the lives passing far overhead.
