Wealth, family loyalty and carefully guarded secrets shape a German soap world in which falling in love rarely leaves existing arrangements intact. Across the original serial, Carla’s relationships with women give her reasons to challenge what her family expects, while a later romance between Rebecca and Marlene creates its own conflicts of desire and belonging. These are substantial chapters in a long ensemble story, rather than a single romance running through every year. Following the relevant periods reveals how queer love can expose the distance between public roles and private choices. The characters must decide which obligations they accept and what kind of life they are prepared to claim for themselves.
