In a future community that presents conformity as harmony, a group of young performers compete for an opportunity that could define their lives. Discovering music and history beyond the culture they have been taught changes what they believe is possible. Brooklyn and Sage’s relationship develops within that upheaval, as each woman has to decide what she is willing to risk for the other and for a different future. Their romance has a recurring place in the ensemble’s personal and political conflicts. The musical science fiction drama connects self-expression with resistance, making the freedom to love part of a larger struggle over who gets to tell a community’s story.
