Nan Astley expects a familiar future in her family's seaside oyster business until a music-hall performance makes another life suddenly imaginable. She follows the magnetic Kitty Butler toward London, where the stage offers both a living and a language for feelings she has not previously been able to express. Love, class and dependence shape the relationships that follow as Nan moves through very different corners of Victorian society. Each new connection asks her to decide how much of herself she is prepared to surrender for belonging. Adapted as a three-part television serial, the story centers a young woman's lesbian desire and her difficult search for an independent place in the world.
