Detective Ember Manning investigates a fire beside a Lancashire lake and discovers connections that reach into the town’s past. The case draws her toward a missing girl and toward questions about the stories adults have accepted about young people’s lives. In the earlier timeline, Caitlin is drawn into Amy’s world, where attraction becomes entangled with manipulation, vulnerability and circumstances neither girl fully understands. Their growing feelings form an important part of the mystery rather than a separate romantic escape from it. Across four episodes, the drama examines power and consent while asking how differently familiar events can look when the people involved are finally allowed to be heard.
