Lives intersect on Chicago’s South Side as neighbours, relatives and friends negotiate the consequences of choices that rarely affect only one person. Love and family offer support, but they also bring responsibilities that can become difficult to carry. From the third season, Nina and Dre’s marriage places a lesbian couple within the series’ portrait of parenthood and community. Their household has its own tensions and moments of connection, making it a developed part of an ensemble drama concerned with the everyday work of surviving and caring for other people.
