A group of young people sent from a failing space station must discover whether Earth can support human life again. Survival becomes a contest between communities, competing loyalties and leaders asked to make decisions no one should have to make. Clarke Griffin’s relationship with Grounder commander Lexa develops amid those pressures, giving their personal connection political consequences as well as emotional weight. Clarke’s bisexuality is also reflected in her connection with Niylah. The series remains a broad science-fiction ensemble, with its clearest Clarke and Lexa storyline in the second and third seasons. Their relationship is significant without being the same continuing romance across the entire run.
