In a Massachusetts household in the 1990s, teenage John Bennett tries to get through school with a foul-mouthed living teddy bear as his closest companion. Ted's presence makes ordinary problems more chaotic, but the family's everyday arguments also reveal the expectations surrounding each person at home. John's cousin Blaire often challenges those assumptions, bringing a more questioning perspective to conversations the adults would rather settle quickly. Her queer identity, coming-out and relationship with Sarah become substantial parts of the ensemble's story across the first two seasons. The comedy mixes deliberately outrageous behavior with a family's uneven efforts to understand one another, giving Blaire concerns and desires of her own within its familiar household.
