Spain in 1958 offers little freedom to women whose lives have already been arranged around other people’s wishes. Begoña’s struggle within the powerful de la Reina family opens a period drama of control, ambition and closely guarded secrets surrounding a perfume business and the people who depend on it. Within this larger ensemble, Marta de la Reina and Fina Valero develop a major romantic story shaped by the pressures of their time and their different positions in the community. Their relationship gives the series a sustained sapphic thread as other families pursue their own hopes. Love, work and survival become difficult to separate when independence carries a personal cost.
