Dex Parios has debts, a brother to care for and a talent for getting into situations that require more confidence than preparation. Becoming a private investigator in Portland gives her a way to use that instinct, even as experiences from her military service continue to shape her choices. The return of musician Fiona X brings an intimate part of Dex’s past into her present and complicates the boundaries between a job and a personal connection. Her bisexuality belongs to a wider portrait of an imperfect woman trying to manage work, family and desire. The detective stories make room for those contradictions without requiring her to have solved herself first.
