Nola Darling wants room to make art and define intimacy on her own terms, even when the people around her prefer a clearer agreement about what she owes them. Her life in Brooklyn is crowded with lovers, friends and professional ambitions that do not always fit comfortably together. A relationship with Opal offers a different perspective on stability and desire, while also asking Nola to consider the consequences of her independence. The television adaptation centers a pansexual Black woman whose romantic life remains inseparable from her work and community. Its relationships are complicated by competing needs, making freedom something the characters must negotiate rather than simply announce and expect others to accept.
