The Silva sisters have been raised to expect comfort and respectability, but a family crisis leaves them responsible for a business and a future they were never trained to manage. In early twentieth-century Madrid, keeping their household together means challenging assumptions about what women can do. For Celia, that challenge also involves desires that do not fit the marriage and domestic life expected of her. Her relationship with Aurora opens a possibility for intimacy while exposing the dangers attached to being understood too clearly by the wrong people. Celia's lesbian life forms a central strand within the sisters' broader struggle for independence, work and the right to make consequential choices.
