Mildred Ratched arrives at a California psychiatric hospital with an immaculate appearance and reasons for being there that she keeps to herself. The institution promises modern treatment, but ambition and cruelty shape much of what happens behind its doors. Meeting political aide Gwendolyn Briggs introduces a possibility Mildred has worked hard to suppress: an intimate life she might choose for herself. Their attraction becomes a central thread in a story of secrets, institutional power and survival. The period thriller reimagines the familiar character through a different history, allowing her relationship with another woman to complicate both her carefully managed identity and the plans she has brought to the hospital.
