R.J. Decker is trying to turn a damaged reputation into a new career. A former newspaper photographer with a prison record, he starts working as a private investigator in South Florida, taking cases whose oddness often rivals the trouble in his own life. His circle includes his journalist ex, Catherine Delacroix, and her wife, police detective Melody Abreu, whose different skills make them important collaborators. A woman from his past adds another unpredictable element to the arrangement. The cases provide the procedural engine, while these overlapping relationships give Decker’s attempted fresh start its complications. Catherine and Mel are part of that principal ensemble rather than the centre of a separate romance series.
