When her disability benefits are cut, Emily needs a way to make money that the system is not offering her. An encounter with an old schoolfriend leads to a highly unlikely business venture: selling drugs. Sharp and impatient with other people’s assumptions, she tries to turn that opportunity into independence, gathering an unconventional crew along the way. Emily is a lesbian protagonist whose attraction to Jo sits alongside the show’s central friendship, absurd criminal schemes and anger at a hostile benefits system. Sapphic lead: Emily in season 1, with her attraction to Jo alongside the central crime comedy.
