In early-1990s Queens, Kanan Stark grows up within a family whose loyalties are tangled with the drug trade. His cousin LaVerne, known as Jukebox, has ambitions and desires that do not fit neatly into the future others imagine for her. In the first season, her relationship with Nicole creates a private space for love and vulnerability amid pressure from home and the world around them. This crime drama gives that romance meaningful emotional weight while following a much wider network of family conflict, ambition and dangerous choices.
