In Cold War Moscow, American embassy secretaries Bea and Twila lose their husbands under suspicious circumstances. Refusing to accept the official explanation, they step into espionage and try to discover what happened. Their unlikely partnership puts them in contact with people whose loyalties are difficult to read, including Ivanna, with whom Twila develops a romantic connection. The spy story has a sapphic co-lead and a meaningful relationship subplot; Bea and Twila are the central working partnership.
