A secret surveillance system identifies people who may soon become involved in violent crimes, leaving a small team to determine what will happen and whether they can intervene. As the threat grows beyond individual cases, hacker Root and former operative Sameen Shaw become increasingly important to the struggle. Their relationship moves from provocative exchanges and guarded trust toward explicit romantic feeling in the later seasons. It develops within a story about surveillance, sacrifice and competing ideas of human freedom, rather than in a conventional domestic setting. The clearest sapphic arc lies in seasons three through five, with important distinctions between actual events and simulated experiences.
