A newspaper route becomes a journey far beyond the neighborhood when four girls from 1988 are swept into a conflict over time travel. Working together is difficult enough without discovering that the future contains versions of themselves they could never have imagined. For KJ, encountering her older self opens up a possibility about her sexuality that she has not yet found words for. Her growing understanding belongs alongside the friendships and disagreements that hold the group together. The science fiction adventure lets these young characters face questions about identity, family and the people they might become, while KJ’s lesbian coming of age gives the story a particularly intimate thread.
