Piper Chapman enters a women's prison expecting her sentence to be a temporary interruption to an otherwise settled life. Encountering her former girlfriend Alex Vause makes that separation between past and present impossible, while the women around her reveal lives far more complicated than the labels attached to them. The series expands into an ensemble drama about friendship, desire, institutional power and survival, with several substantial sapphic relationships alongside Piper and Alex's continuing connection. Its humour sits beside increasingly difficult questions about race, inequality and the prison system. Queer women occupy central positions throughout the story, but the show is a broad prison drama rather than a romance built around one uncomplicated couple.
