Penelope Alvarez raises two children with help, opinions and occasional interference from her mother, Lydia. Their home becomes a place where everyday family comedy opens into conversations about work, heritage, mental health and belonging. Daughter Elena’s realization that she is a lesbian forms a major part of the first season, including the question of how her family will respond. Later seasons allow her to grow beyond that first disclosure and build a relationship with Syd, who is nonbinary. The series gives Elena room to be earnest, awkward, political and romantic while remaining part of a multigenerational Cuban American family with its own competing needs.
