When former sweethearts Alan and Celia reconnect late in life, their renewed romance shakes up two families already carrying plenty of unfinished business. Celia's daughter Caroline runs a school, navigates a difficult marriage and is beginning to acknowledge feelings she has spent years setting aside. Her relationship with colleague Kate forces her to consider what honesty will cost, particularly when her mother's enthusiasm for unconventional love has limits. Caroline's story remains a major part of the family drama as the series moves through new partnerships, parenting and loss. Its sapphic thread belongs to a woman building a fuller life within a family that is still learning how to accept her.
