Patty enters the beauty pageant world determined to make people regret the way they once treated her, drawing her friends into an increasingly chaotic pursuit of recognition. Her best friend Nonnie has feelings and ambitions that do not fit neatly into the role of loyal supporter. Understanding her attraction to women becomes part of learning what she wants outside Patty’s orbit. A relationship with Dee offers the possibility of being seen differently, while also exposing the strain in Nonnie’s oldest friendship. The dark comedy places this recurring sapphic story inside a much larger and deliberately excessive satire of appearances, appetite and the search for approval.
