Ordinary people discover abilities that connect their private lives to dangers they do not yet understand. Some try to remain hidden, while others look for a purpose in powers that can make them valuable to the wrong people. Claire Bennet's ability to heal complicates her attempts to have an ordinary future, including her move to college in the fourth season. A friendship with roommate Gretchen develops into attraction and a growing closeness, even as threats around them make trust difficult. Their recurring storyline gives that season a sapphic connection within a much larger ensemble. The science-fiction drama follows people deciding how much of themselves to reveal and whom they are willing to let into their lives.
