Before the Pink Ladies become a Rydell institution, four young women find common cause in refusing the roles their school has prepared for them. Music, reputation and friendship shape their attempts to make room for themselves in the 1950s social order. For Cynthia, joining the theatre world brings a connection with Lydia and feelings she is still learning to name. This musical prequel gives her sapphic coming-of-age story substantial space within an ensemble about outsiders turning friendship into a form of rebellion.
