A school show choir gives a group of teenagers a stage on which to imagine lives larger than the roles assigned to them. Competitions and musical numbers sit alongside friendships, rivalries and the uneven work of becoming an adult. Santana Lopez and Brittany Pierce begin within the cheerleading world but develop a romantic story that becomes substantial in the second season. Santana’s struggles to acknowledge her feelings and be open about her sexuality carry consequences beyond the choir room. Their relationship continues through later seasons, alongside separations and other partners, as the ensemble moves beyond school and asks what belonging might look like in a wider world.
