Kate and Tully’s friendship stretches from adolescence into adulthood, carrying years of loyalty, resentment and family history. In the second season, Kate’s daughter Marah begins working out what her feelings for her friend Ashley mean. That attraction becomes part of her relationship with her parents and with Tully, whose willingness to bend the rules has consequences well beyond one evening out. The sapphic story is Marah’s coming-out and romantic hopes, not a reinterpretation of the two central friends as a couple. Viewers seeking that material should look to season two, where it remains a supporting strand.
