Amy and Karma discover that being mistaken for a couple brings them unexpected popularity at their unusually progressive high school. What begins as a performance becomes much more complicated when Amy realizes that her feelings for her best friend are real. She must work out what she wants while protecting a friendship that cannot simply return to its old shape. Relationships with Reagan and later Sabrina give Amy experiences beyond the original deception, even as Karma remains an important part of her life. The comedy’s three seasons follow Amy’s queer self-discovery, keeping a distinction between a pretend relationship, a one-sided longing and the partners she actually dates.
