In 1996 Oregon, students in a high school audiovisual club and drama club discover that making a movie together may be easier than understanding one another. Kate Messner is trying to fit into a world that already seems to have decided who she should be. As she questions her attraction to girls, her growing connection with drama student Emaline makes the stakes feel more personal. Their relationship develops alongside awkward friendships, family uncertainty and the small ambitions that can feel enormous at school. The single season treats Kate’s self-discovery as a central story, allowing its comedy and period nostalgia to coexist with the vulnerability of first love.
