After time in treatment for an eating disorder, Mia returns to school feeling that everyone else has moved ahead without her. A bucket list of supposedly essential teenage experiences seems like a way to catch up, sending her into parties, dating and decisions that do not follow the plan she imagined. Her attraction to Carli and her relationship with Alison become part of a much bigger struggle to understand herself and accept support. The series centres Mia's queer coming-of-age while treating recovery, friendship and family as equally consequential parts of her life. Its romantic interests are substantial characters in her journey, though the story's main concern is the person Mia is becoming rather than choosing a perfect couple.
