The Yorkshire village of Emmerdale brings families, friends and rivals into daily contact, whether they are sharing a drink, working together or trying to keep their distance. Its continuing stories grow from relationships that can stretch back years, carrying old loyalties and disappointments into new situations. Vanessa Woodfield and Charity Dingle have a substantial romantic history within that ensemble, while Vanessa’s later relationship with Suzy Merton adds another chapter to her life. These relationships unfold across different periods of the series rather than forming one uninterrupted love story. Around them, the village continues to change as its residents negotiate family responsibilities, unexpected arrivals and the consequences of past decisions.
