The rise of a fictional 1970s rock band is reconstructed through performances, memories and relationships that refuse to stay backstage. Away from the band’s central romantic turmoil, singer Simone Jackson is building her own musical future in New York’s disco scene. Her relationship with Bernie gives her room to explore desire, ambition and the cost of keeping love private. Their story develops across the single season and receives a dedicated focus in episode seven. It is a substantial ensemble romance, distinct from Simone’s friendship with Daisy and from the show’s more heavily promoted heterosexual love triangle.
