The firefighters and paramedics of Firehouse 51 share a job that makes trust essential and keeping personal difficulties private almost impossible. Paramedic Leslie Shay brings humor and professional assurance to the crew, while her romantic life proves less straightforward than her work beside an ambulance. Reconnecting with Clarice and later becoming involved with Devon test her hopes for commitment and the future. Her friendships within the firehouse remain equally important, particularly when plans for a family become difficult to separate from the support she depends on. The early seasons give a lesbian character a substantial place in the ensemble, with relationships that have consequences beyond a passing mention.
