During the Depression, a travelling carnival crosses a landscape marked by deprivation, religious fervour and the possibility of supernatural power. The lives of its performers become entangled with a larger struggle over destiny, while private loyalties and resentments continue behind the public spectacle. Sofie works within the carnival alongside her mother, and her connection with Libby Dreifuss draws attraction and betrayal into that enclosed community. Their first-season intimacy is brief and emotionally complicated. The sapphic designation is therefore limited to this particular supporting arc. The series as a whole remains an unsettling supernatural ensemble drama, with the relationship embedded in its darker treatment of trust and exploitation.
