Corporate lawyer Joanna Hanley returns to her hometown for a case that seems straightforward until she encounters young people whose unexplained illnesses deserve closer attention. Working with local lawyer Billy Crawford forces her to reconsider both the dispute and her own relationship to a place she thought she had left behind. Luna Spence and Molly Ross are among the people whose lives become bound up with the investigation. Their relationship gives the early seasons a sustained queer strand alongside the legal story and its effects on families and community. The drama follows the difficult work of challenging powerful institutions while recognizing that the people seeking justice have complicated lives beyond their cases.
