Buffy Summers tries to survive school, friendship and family while protecting Sunnydale from the dangers gathering beneath it. Her friends become essential to that work, and their changing lives are as important as the monsters they confront. Willow Rosenberg’s growing relationship with Tara Maclay brings a substantial sapphic story into the fourth season, developing through the fifth and sixth before a different relationship with Kennedy appears in the seventh. Magic gives the women a shared language, but intimacy still requires trust, boundaries and difficult choices. These relationships are major parts of the later ensemble rather than the premise of the show’s first three seasons.
