A coastal community’s attempt to understand a child’s death gives way to the strain of a public trial. In the second series, barrister Jocelyn Knight returns to work while confronting changes in her own life. Newspaper editor Maggie Radcliffe is both a familiar presence and someone whose importance Jocelyn has left unspoken for too long. Their relationship offers a quiet sapphic strand within the legal and family drama, with an on-screen romantic development late in the season. The meaningful romance scope is series two; later references should not turn the entire three-series run into a continuing couple story.
