A wartime munitions factory brings women from very different lives onto the same production line. The work is dangerous, demanding and unexpectedly liberating, offering wages and friendships that challenge what their families expect of them. Skilled worker Betty McRae seems comfortable in this new world, but her attraction to women is something she cannot openly name without risking the life she has built. Her feelings for fellow worker Kate and later relationship with Teresa make that private struggle a major part of the ensemble. Against Canada's home-front war effort, the series follows women discovering that the freedoms of factory life do not extend equally beyond its gates.
