Gotham needs someone willing to challenge the violence and corruption that thrive in Batman’s absence. Kate Kane first takes up that responsibility, bringing her own unresolved family history and relationships into the city’s struggle for justice. Ryan Wilder later inherits the suit and reshapes its meaning through experiences of exclusion, loss and survival. Both versions place a lesbian heroine at the centre of the action. Their connections with Sophie Moore form part of a series that treats private identity, community and the power to protect others as closely linked questions.
