At Larkhall women’s prison, inmates and officers live within a system where authority does not guarantee integrity and small acts of solidarity can carry real consequences. Prisoner Nikki Wade challenges the institution around her, while governor Helen Stewart tries to reconcile her responsibilities with what she sees happening inside. Their growing connection becomes a major story in the first three series, complicated by the unequal positions they occupy and the risks of acknowledging what they feel. The wider drama follows an evolving prison ensemble through eight series. Nikki and Helen’s romance belongs to that earlier stretch, rather than continuing as the same relationship throughout the full run.
