As Sam Gardner seeks greater independence, his family must also reconsider the roles it has settled into around him. His sister Casey is a talented runner whose ambitions take her into a new school and a friendship with Izzie that becomes increasingly difficult to categorize. Attraction, uncertainty and the desire to belong begin to pull Casey in competing directions. Their connection grows from the second season into a substantial romance in the third and fourth, with pressures from school, family and their own different experiences. Casey’s story is one strand of a wider family comedy-drama, giving her space to make choices that are about her own future.
