A new academy brings together students from previously separate schools in a Yorkshire town where integration is easier to announce than to achieve. For lifelong friends Nasreen and Missy, the change tests an already complicated balance of loyalty, family and ambition. Nasreen is also working out how to live openly as a lesbian in circumstances where each disclosure can reshape the relationships she depends on. Her early attraction to a teacher and later relationship with a fellow student belong to a broader coming-of-age story about finding choices beyond those other people have made for her. The school ensemble gives her identity meaningful narrative space while keeping friendship, rather than a romance with Missy, at the heart of their bond.
