An Egyptian-American family tries to make itself appear reassuringly ordinary as suspicion reshapes daily life after September 11. Different generations respond with their own forms of code-switching, creating conflict both inside the household and beyond it. Teenage daughter Mona is also negotiating a secret relationship with Gina, and the question of coming out becomes entangled with the family’s changing circumstances. This adult animated satire gives their romance an ongoing place within a larger story about assimilation, prejudice and the pressure to perform a version of yourself for other people.
